Throughout rock history, some drummers stood out not just for their skill but also for the energy they brought to the stage. Their beats became the backbone of many iconic songs. Sadly, a few of these talented musicians left us earlier than expected. Here are five drummers whose contributions to music were significant, and whose lives ended too soon.

Randy Castillo (1950–2002)

Randy Castillo was a drummer from Albuquerque, New Mexico. He became known for playing with Ozzy Osbourne during the 1980s and early 1990s. Later, he joined Mötley Crüe in 1999. Castillo’s drumming style fit well with the heavy metal and hard rock genres. He started playing music at a young age and was inspired after watching The Beatles perform on television.

In 2000, Castillo was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma, a type of cancer. Though it went into remission, the cancer returned aggressively. He passed away on March 26, 2002, at the age of 51. At the time, he was working on a new music project with bassist Mike Inez.
