Brit Turner, the drummer for Blackberry Smoke, has passed away at the age of 57 after battling glioblastoma, a fast-growing type of brain cancer. The sad news was shared through the band’s social media platforms.

In their announcement, the band expressed deep sorrow over Turner’s passing, highlighting his remarkable qualities as a caring, driven, and empathetic individual. Turner was described as the guiding force behind Blackberry Smoke, shaping the band’s ethos and direction.

Turner’s battle with glioblastoma began in 2022, leading to surgery. The band expressed gratitude to all who supported Turner and his family during this challenging time.

Born in Mt. Clemons, Michigan, and raised in Smyrna, Georgia, Turner developed a passion for drumming from a young age, influenced by his family’s musical background. He reflected on his musical journey, “I received a snare drum for Christmas from my parents before the sixth grade. It was a purple sparkle Stewart set,” he said to Modern Drummer in 2012.

“My father played in a big band in the early days while becoming an officer in the Air Force. Granny played piano and my uncle Brit plays guitar. I guess that’s how I got exposed to music.”

Despite his health struggles, Turner remained dedicated to his music, contributing to Blackberry Smoke’s latest album, “Be Right Here,” released in 2024. His bandmates emphasized the significance of creating music together during Turner’s treatment, fostering a stronger bond among them.

Brit Turner leaves behind a legacy of music and camaraderie, remembered for his talent, spirit, and unwavering determination.
