Billy Idol Drops Trailer for Official Documentary ‘Billy Idol Should Be Dead’

Rock veteran Billy Idol continues a remarkable late-career surge, earning a nomination for the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Class of 2026 while simultaneously unveiling a major new documentary and celebrating the success of his first full-length album in more than a decade.

Rock Hall Nomination and a Career-Spanning Moment

Idol is among the artists nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s Class of 2026, joining a diverse group that includes Phil Collins, Lauryn Hill, Oasis, Sade, Iron Maiden, and Jeff Buckley.

The nomination recognizes nearly five decades of influence, from Idol’s late-1970s punk roots to his emergence as one of the defining figures of the MTV-era rock. Few artists from that generation have maintained the same cultural visibility—or touring stamina—well into the modern era.

“Billy Idol Should Be Dead” Hits Theaters

Coinciding with the nomination, Idol has debuted a new trailer for the feature-length documentary “Billy Idol Should Be Dead,” which opens in theaters nationwide following its premiere at Los Angeles’ TCL Chinese Theatre.

Directed by three-time Grammy winner Jonas Åkerlund and produced by Live Nation Studios, the film traces Idol’s evolution from punk upstart to global rock icon. Built around rare archival footage and personal interviews with Idol, his family, and longtime collaborators, the documentary examines his rapid rise during the MTV boom, as well as the personal struggles he overcame to remain a lasting presence in rock ’n’ roll.

The film made its festival debut at the Tribeca Film Festival and features the original song “Dying To Live,” written with Academy Award–nominated composer J. Ralph. The closing sequence, constructed around the track, blends animated and archival imagery from throughout Idol’s life, with additional writing contributions from Steve Stevens, Tommy English, and Joe Janiak.

New Music, Chart Success, and the Road Ahead

Idol’s latest album, “Dream Into It,” released via Dark Horse Records, marks his first full-length studio effort in more than ten years. The record debuted at No. 7 on the U.S. Top Albums chart, reached No. 4 on the U.S. Current Rock Albums chart, climbed to No. 9 in the U.K., and peaked at No. 2 in Germany. The album has drawn praise from outlets including The New Yorker, New York Magazine, AARP The Magazine, Consequence, Billboard, and USA Today.

Featuring extensive collaboration with Stevens and guest appearances from Avril Lavigne, Joan Jett, and Alison Mosshart of The Kills, the album underscores Idol’s continued relevance. That momentum carried into his recent “It’s a Nice Day To…Tour Again!” run, which sold out venues across the U.S., Europe, and Latin America with support from Joan Jett & The Blackhearts and New Model Army.

Nearly 50 years after first emerging with Generation X, Billy Idol remains not just a legacy act, but a working, charting, and touring artist—one whose story is still being written, even as institutions begin to enshrine his past.
