A Long-Awaited Return to New Music
After more than two decades without a new studio release, 38 Special has returned with fresh material and renewed plans on the road. The Southern rock band, best known for songs like “Hold on Loosely” and “Caught up in You,” marked a major moment this year by releasing Milestone, their first album since 2004’s Drivetrain. The release also comes with news of a North American tour set for 2026.
According to Ultimate Classic Rock, the band will begin touring in February to support the new album. The run follows a busy 2025 schedule that already saw 38 Special sharing stages with Kansas and Jefferson Starship, keeping their presence strong among longtime rock audiences.
A Lineup Shaped by History
While the band name remains familiar, its lineup reflects many years of change. Don Barnes is now the only remaining member from the group’s most recognized era. Barnes co-founded 38 Special in 1974 with Donnie Van Zant and has continued to guide the band through different chapters.
The new album features a wide circle of collaborators. Among the performers and cowriters on Milestone are Randy Bachman, Train singer Pat Monahan, and Survivor co-founder Jim Peterik. Peterik, a longtime partner of the band, also produced the record, helping shape its sound and direction.
Marking a 50-Year Anniversary
As American Songwriter reported, Milestone was created to honor the band’s 50th anniversary. The album includes nine new original songs, most of them co-written by Barnes and Peterik. Barnes admitted that the project felt intimidating at first.
“It was not like anybody’s beating the door down for a new 38 Special record, but we have a lot of rabid fans out there,” he said. That support helped push the band forward as the album took shape.

Songs Built From Everyday Moments
One of the album’s standout tracks, “All I Haven’t Said,” came together with help from Barnes’ wife, Christine. Barnes shared how the idea formed during a quiet moment at home.
“She was in the kitchen,” Barnes explained. “I was sitting in a dining room chair, playing some major 7th [chord], just kind of strumming…random chords. And she came around the corner and said, ‘That sounds like that should be called ‘All I Haven’t Said,’ just a title, this, like, beautiful title.”
Fans React and Tour Plans Take Shape
Reaction to Milestone quickly spread online. “Guys only make hits, that real rock sound,” one fan wrote. Another added, “Amazing!” while a third said, “Milestone is 80s fire in 2025!” One more fan summed it up with, “This is sooooooo awesome.”
The 2026 tour begins Feb. 6 in Peoria, Ill. Stops include cities across Georgia, South Dakota, Florida, Louisiana, and Texas. Tickets are available through the band’s official website.
