Alex Van Halen has shared “Unfinished,” the last song he wrote with his brother Eddie before the legendary guitarist passed away in 2020. The six-minute track, subtitled “Between Us Two,” was initially teased and is now available for free download on the Van Halen website. The song is also featured in the audiobook version of Alex’s memoir Brothers, which is being released today.
Brothers take a deep dive into the Van Halen siblings’ early years, leading up to David Lee Roth’s departure from the band in 1985. Alex has described that period as a turning point, explaining that the band was never quite the same after Roth’s exit.
Dealing with Eddie’s Loss
In a recent interview with The Guardian, Alex admitted that he is still coming to terms with Eddie’s death after his battle with cancer. “I’ll probably be dealing with it until my dying day,” he shared, reflecting on how difficult it’s been to fully process the loss of his younger brother.
Alex expressed some frustration about Eddie’s approach to his health. “Had Ed listened to our dad, he’d still be here,” he said. “Instead, he did everything he could to mess that up… We owe everything to [our dad].” He recalled how Eddie’s initial decision to treat his tongue cancer in 2000 with an oral surgeon, instead of an oncologist, made no sense to him. “Ed, what the fuck are you thinking?” Alex said, frustrated by the choice.
Family and Music Roots
Alex also touched on their upbringing, recalling how their mother pushed them to learn classical music as immigrants in America. Despite their eventual fame, she wasn’t a fan of their hard rock sound. “She always thought Van Halen’s music was a disgrace,” Alex revealed, adding an interesting layer to their family dynamic.
The song “Unfinished” and the memoir Brothers both offer fans an emotional look into Alex and Eddie’s relationship, giving new insight into their musical journey and the bond they shared.
