Watch Matthew Perry’s Class For “Sarcasm 101” In SNL

As we remember the late “King of Sarcasm,” let’s look back at one of the episodes of Saturday Night Live where Matthew Perry hosted the variety show as a professor in ‘Sarcasm 101’ class.

The comedy skit started when students such as Cheri Oteri, Will Ferrell, and Tim Meadows were seated inside the class being administered by the ‘Sarcasm 101’ class professor, Matthew Perry. The class was in the middle of the discussion when this new student played by Ana Gasteyer, entered the classroom.

Gasteyer who played “Marissa” in the skit, was sent to Perry’s class because her mother said she lacked a “sense of humor” and that she needed to learn to become less sensitive.

The NBC sitcom Friends has just begun airing its fourth season when Perry did the SNL hosting.

The actor who was vocal about his long struggle with overcoming drug addiction, was found unresponsive at his home last Saturday. The authorities said that there were no drugs or signs of foul play at the scene.

In Perry’s 2022 memoir, he opened up about his long struggle to overcome drug, and alcohol addiction, and the pressure he felt to be funny. Perry stated:

“As I admitted at the [Friends] reunion in 2020, I felt like I was gonna die if the live audience didn’t laugh. And it’s not healthy for sure…That pressure left me in a bad place, and I also knew that of the six people making that show, only one of them was sick.”

He also added how sobriety made both his work and personal lives better. The actor said:

“Nine was the only year I was completely sober for a Friends season. Care to hazard a guess as to which was the only year I got nominated for an Emmy for Best Actor in a Comedy? Yup, season nine. … What did I do differently? I listened. I didn’t just stand there and wait for my turn to speak. Sometimes in acting, it’s more powerful to listen than to talk. I have tried to incorporate that in real life, too. Know more, say less. That’s my new mantra.”
