When Alex Call and Jim Keller sat down to write a song about a former love named Jenny, they could not have predicted the cultural phenomenon it would become. Released in 1981, “867-5309” by Tommy Tutone quickly rose through the charts, hitting No. 1 on the U.S. Mainstream Rock chart and peaking at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. More than four decades later, the track’s legacy has taken on new meaning, as frontman Tommy Heath helps transform its iconic phone number into a source of real-world support.

A Hit Song with a Life of Its Own

Since its debut, “867-5309” has inspired generations of listeners to dial the now-famous number, hoping to reach the elusive Jenny. What began as a playful pop culture curiosity has evolved into something far more impactful. In partnership with the Cancer Support Community and Gilda’s Club, the number has been repurposed into a functioning hotline for individuals affected by cancer.

The initiative turns a once-fictional connection into a tangible one, offering help to those in need. As Sally Werner, CEO of Cancer Support Community, explained, “Anyone impacted by cancer can call CSC-867-5309 [272-867-5309] to receive immediate support, trusted information, and personalized guidance from trained specialists at Cancer Support Community.”

A Personal Mission for Tommy Heath

For Heath, the project is deeply personal. Having witnessed loved ones battle the disease, the singer felt a strong responsibility to act. “I have some family members who are struggling with cancer,” he said. Reflecting on life on the road, he added, “I’m out on tour with a lot of bands and suddenly somebody’s not there.”

Believing that cancer is “affecting us all,” Heath hopes the hotline will remind people that they are not alone. He envisions it as a simple yet powerful resource: “When someone is depressed and confused, they’ll go, ‘Hey, I’ll call 867-5309. Somebody’s waiting there to help me.’”

The Real Jenny and an Unlikely Legacy

The mystery surrounding Jenny has long fueled speculation, but Keller confirmed in the early 2000s that she was, in fact, real. “Jenny is a regular girl, not a hooker. Friends of mine wrote her name and number on a men’s room wall at a bar. I called her on a dare, and we dated for a while,” he revealed.

As for her reaction to the song’s fame, Keller admitted, “I haven’t talked with her since the song became a hit, but I hear she thinks I’m a real jerk for writing it.”

Still, the legacy of “867-5309” now extends well beyond its origins in rock lore. What was once a number associated with curiosity, humor, and a fleeting relationship has been redefined by purpose. In a time when classic songs are often frozen in nostalgia, this one continues to move forward—reshaped by the very people who keep it alive.

There is a quiet significance in that evolution. A song built on spontaneity has become a channel for something far more intentional: care, support, and solidarity. Today, dialing 867-5309 is no longer about chasing a name on a wall—it is about reaching a real voice on the other end, one ready to listen, to guide, and to remind callers that they are not facing their fight alone.
