Police Investigation and Arrest

Los Angeles police are investigating an apparent homicide after Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were found stabbed to death in their Brentwood home on Sunday. Authorities later arrested the couple’s son, Nick Reiner, 32, in connection with the deaths. He is being held in jail on $4 million bail, according to booking records.

Police Chief Jim McDonnell said Nick Reiner was “booked for murder.” As of Monday, officials had not released details about specific charges or a possible motive. The Los Angeles Police Department has also not formally announced the arrest, according to The New York Times, though online jail records show that Nick Reiner was taken into custody late Sunday night and booked shortly after 5 a.m. Monday.

Officers responded to the home around 3:40 p.m. local time after receiving a call related to a death investigation. When they arrived, they found two bodies inside the house. Police said the deaths appeared to be a homicide and that investigators were seeking a search warrant to continue processing the scene.

Focus of the Investigation

Because of Nick Reiner’s past, police attention turned to him early in the investigation, according to a person briefed on the case who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly. That person said authorities were already familiar with his background when the investigation began.

Nick Reiner was arrested Sunday night by Los Angeles police. He remains in custody as detectives continue to examine evidence from the home and interview people connected to the family. Officials have not said whether any other suspects are being considered.

Rob Reiner, 78, was widely known first as a sitcom actor and later as a successful film director. His work included “This Is Spinal Tap,” “When Harry Met Sally …” and “The Princess Bride.” Beyond film, he was active in California and national Democratic politics, supporting causes such as gay marriage. Michele Singer Reiner, 68, worked as a photographer and later as a producer.

The couple had been married since 1989 and had three children together. Nick Reiner is their middle child.

Nick Reiner’s Background

Nick Reiner has spoken publicly for years about his struggles with drug addiction and periods of homelessness that began when he was a teenager. He entered rehab for the first time at age 15 and later returned many times. Those experiences became the basis for his work in film.

At 22, Nick cowrote “Being Charlie,” a movie loosely inspired by his early life and directed by his father. In a 2016 interview with People, he discussed his past in detail.

“That made me who I am now, having to deal with that stuff,” he said. “I met crazy great people there, so out of my element. Now, I’ve been home for a really long time, and I’ve sort of gotten acclimated back to being in LA and being around my family. But there was a lot of dark years there.”

Police have described the case as an apparent homicide. Further details about the investigation have not yet been released.
