Singer Nancy Wilson of the 70s rock band Heart is facing criticism after saying in an interview that she is “embarrassed” to be an American. The 71-year-old made the remark while speaking with the Milwaukee Sentinel this month, sparking backlash over what many see as a negative view of her country.
Wilson compared today’s political climate to the 1970s, stating, “We were kind of embarrassed at that time to call ourselves American because of the dirty politics of the Vietnam War.” She then added, “To be as subtle as possible, it’s more embarrassing now.”

Fan Reactions
Her statement did not sit well with some listeners. One fan took to social media and responded, saying it is “embarrassing to be a Heart fan now.” Others shared similar opinions, expressing their disappointment in her comments.
Wilson also shared her thoughts on the role of women in today’s culture, claiming, “I think for women in the culture, the pendulum will come back again, and there’ll be another renaissance in the arts to push back against the oppression of the cranky old rich white guys.”
Questioning Her View
Despite her claim that women are losing momentum, many of today’s top cultural stars are women. As of March 22, six of the top ten albums in the U.S. are by female artists, showing strong representation in the music industry. Wilson did not address this contrast in her remarks.
Heart’s Return to Touring
Wilson and her sister Ann recently returned to touring after Ann’s cancer diagnosis led to a canceled tour. Ann has reassured fans that she is feeling much better, and the two are currently performing in Manitoba, Canada, this week.
