In an unforgettable moment at the 2024 Glastonbury Festival, fans witnessed a delightful surprise as Michael J. Fox joined Coldplay onstage. The “Back to the Future” star appeared during the climactic close of the band’s set on June 29, met by an exhilarating audience reaction.

A Starring Guest Appearance at Glastonbury

Chris Martin, Coldplay’s lead singer, prefaced Fox’s entrance with improvised lyrics that paid homage to both the excited fans and Michael Eavis, the festival’s co-founder. As the spotlight turned to Fox with guitar in hand, the crowd erupted in cheers. Martin introduced him with a playful homage, singing, “Oh here’s another legendary Michael, one who just totally rocks. With his Chuck Berry riff, and the way he punched Biff, ladies and gentleman, please welcome Michael J. Fox.”

The actor partnered with the band for a rendition of their hit “Fix You.” The performance was charged with emotion as Martin and Fox stood shoulder to shoulder. The actor’s guitar work led the buildup to the song’s iconic bridge, where Fox gave his all, strumming fervently and punctuating the rhythm with a spirited leg kick.

As the music faded, Martin paused to express his heartfelt thanks, saying, “Thank you so much everybody, and especially, thank you to the main reason why we’re in a band, because of watching ‘Back to the Future.’ So thank you to our hero forever, and one of the most amazing people on earth, Mr. Michael J. Fox. Thanks so much, Michael.”

Michael J. Fox’s Career and Battle with Parkinson’s Disease

Earlier in the year, at the 2024 BAFTA Film Awards, the five-time Emmy Award-winning actor was honored with a standing ovation as he presented the award for best film. This public recognition came just a few years after Fox’s 2020 retirement announcement, which was influenced by his battle with Parkinson’s disease.

Diagnosed with young-onset Parkinson’s disease in 1991 during the filming of “Doc Hollywood,” Fox noticed a tremor in his pinky—a symptom of his condition. It was seven years later, in 1998, that he would reveal his diagnosis to the public. Even with this challenge, Fox continued to act and grace television screens on shows like “Scrubs,” “The Good Wife,” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” After departing from “Spin City” in 2000 to concentrate on advocacy, he launched “The Michael J. Fox Show” on NBC in 2013.

The actor’s contributions to entertainment and his humanitarian efforts were recognized when he was awarded the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award at the 13th Governors Awards in November 2022. Furthermore, Fox shared his personal story in his May 2023 documentary, “Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie,” available on Apple TV+. The film details his rise to stardom and his experiences living with Parkinson’s disease.
