Rickey Medlocke hints at the possibility of a new Lynyrd Skynyrd album in the works, alongside his recent solo release of the charity single Never Run Out of Road.
Medlocke reveals ongoing discussions with Johnny Van Zant regarding the potential Skynyrd album. They’ve uncovered music written over the past 12 to 15 years, possibly even earlier, involving Gary Rossington and potentially other collaborators. The idea is to create a collaborative, all-star Skynyrd record, although specifics are still uncertain.
Should this project materialize, it would mark Lynyrd Skynyrd’s first album of original material since 2012’s Last of a Dyin’ Breed. However, it would also be the band’s first album without co-founder Rossington, who passed away 11 months prior. Medlocke expresses the ongoing emotional impact of Rossington’s absence, especially as the anniversary of his passing approaches.
Medlocke, who has a history with Skynyrd dating back to the early ’70s, alongside Van Zant, the band’s frontman since 1987, are gearing up for the next leg of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s tour, commencing on March 8 in Savannah, Georgia, alongside ZZ Top. The tour extends into September, showcasing the enduring legacy of Southern Rock.
Medlocke’s Musical Contribution
In the meantime, Medlocke promotes his recent release, Never Run Out of Road, which supports charitable causes such as the National Indigenous Women’s Resource Center and the International Wolf Center. The song, co-written with Mark Woerpel and featuring contributions from Skynyrd’s Peter Keys and Medlocke’s wife Stacy Michelle, reflects on Medlocke’s extensive musical journey spanning over five decades.
Reflecting on his career, Medlocke emphasizes his enduring passion for music and his desire to continue creating and performing for as long as possible. Despite acknowledging that there may come a time to step back, he remains committed to his musical endeavors, hinting that retirement may not be on the horizon anytime soon.
