Lukas Nelson is putting his own spin on a big pop hit—and it sounds nothing like the original. Willie Nelson’s son recently shared his version of Sabrina Carpenter’s smash single “Please Please Please” on Instagram, and it’s got fans doing a double take. With slower pacing, rich vocals, and a country vibe, Nelson transforms the pop anthem into something soulful and fresh.
“When I first heard this song, what struck me was the intro synth reminded me a lot of a Beach House song called ‘Space Song,’” Nelson wrote. “I kept listening and found it to be a brilliant progression and melody.. really awesome to see that in a pop song.” He added simply, “Respect. A good song is a good song!”
Carpenter’s original track was a major hit, scoring her first No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 and even snagging a GRAMMY nomination for Song of the Year.
A New Chapter with American Romance
The cover comes at a busy time for Nelson, who’s about to drop his debut solo album, American Romance, on June 20. After fronting his band Promise of the Real for 15 years, Nelson is stepping into the spotlight on his own terms.
“This album is the first chapter in a whole new era of my life as an artist,” he shared on Instagram. “It’s a love story to the country that raised me. Diners and highways that carried me through the joy and pain that led to the music you hear now.”
Over on his official site, Nelson explained even further: “The heartache that America has brought me and the joy that it has brought me. It’s all led to where I am right now.”
On Tour and On the Rise
Ahead of the album’s release, Nelson has already shared two new songs—“Ain’t Done” and “Pretty Much”—both hinting at the emotional honesty and storytelling we can expect from the full record.
He’s also hitting the road this summer, playing shows across the U.S. through August. Whether he’s reworking a pop hit or singing his own heartfelt lyrics, Lukas Nelson is clearly carving out his own space in country music.
