Hairball’s Fiery Performance

During a live show in Sioux City, Iowa, on February 8, 2019, Bobby Jensen, frontman of the KISS tribute band Hairball, faced a situation few performers could imagine. Performing as “Paul Stanley,” Jensen had just started playing KISS’s iconic hit “Detroit Rock City” when sparks from onstage pyrotechnics unexpectedly ignited his hair, which had been sprayed with hairspray.

The scene was reminiscent of Michael Jackson’s hair-catching fire during a 1984 Pepsi commercial. Flames quickly engulfed Jensen’s hair, prompting immediate action from his bandmate and crew members. Despite the chaos, Jensen amazed the crowd by not missing a beat, continuing to play and sing as his head burned.

Bobby Jensen’s Take on the Incident

After the shocking event, Jensen shared his thoughts with Ultimate Classic Rock, showing no concern for what had happened. “I live an Evil Knievel kind of life, so if I’m on fire a little bit, I don’t care, that’s just part of the fun,” Jensen explained. He also clarified that the flames were burning his real hair—“not a wig”—adding, “It was really nice and foofy before the show, now I have a much better Alice Cooper cut.”

Jensen noted that this type of incident hadn’t occurred before but emphasized that the band was prepared for such risks. “That’s why you didn’t see me freak out,” he explained confidently. “I have 100% faith in my guys that they’ll get to me and put me out. So I just thought, ‘I’ll sing to everybody while I’m on fire.’”

No Lasting Damage

Luckily, Jensen’s hair wasn’t too badly burned, and he assured everyone that the situation was under control. “It got a little warm on my head, and some of it’s burned off, but it still doesn’t look bad. We’re OK and the fire marshall was cool, and we’re all licensed and insured and everything’s done properly,” Jensen stated.

Hairball’s explosive performances and detailed portrayal of KISS continue to draw fans, adding to their reputation as one of the most exciting tribute bands around.

The Real KISS Farewell Tour

As fans marveled at the tribute band’s wild performance, they were reminded of KISS’s farewell “End of the Road World Tour,” scheduled for July 2019 in the UK. Shows were planned in major cities, with tickets available through Planet Rock Tickets.

For all nostalgic rock lovers tuning in to hear classics, Planet Rock remains the destination, accessible via DAB radio, smart speakers, and their app for iOS and Android.
