Faces Set To Release Complete BBC Recordings

A new box set, Faces at the BBC — Complete BBC Concert & Session Recordings 1970-1973, will compile all of Faces’ BBC recordings from the early ’70s.

This collection features eight CDs and one Blu-ray, capturing more than 80 tracks, most of which have never been released before. The Blu-ray includes newly restored footage from April 1972, though one BBC session of three songs remains missing.

The set, available on September 6, has been remastered with the involvement of Faces members Rod Stewart, Ronnie Wood, and Kenney Jones. Unfortunately, the other two original members, Ronnie Laine and Ian McLagan, passed away in 1997 and 2014, respectively.

A press release highlighted that “once thought lost, many of the band’s BBC recordings were recovered from the Faces’ own archives and private collections.” Formed in 1969 by McLagan, Laine, and Jones after Steve Marriott left Small Faces to form Humble Pie, Faces welcomed singer Stewart and guitarist Wood from the Jeff Beck Group. They released four albums between 1970 and 1973.

During this period, Stewart also released four solo albums, often backed by Faces. Several tracks from these solo albums are included in the new BBC collection.

Faces at the BBC — Complete BBC Concert & Session Recordings 1970-1973 gathers the band’s performances on various BBC programs, such as John Peel’s Sunday Concert, Sounds for Saturday, and Top Gear. These appearances feature some of their most famous songs, including “(I Know) I’m Losing You,” “Cindy Incidentally,” and “Stay With Me,” their biggest hit.

In 2021, both Wood and Jones mentioned that the surviving members had recorded new music, but nothing has been released since then.
