David Gilmour Finally Talks About Dark Side Of The Moon and Wizard Of Oz Rumors

Many years ago, someone discovered a strange connection between The Dark Side of the Moon, Pink Floyd’s classic 1973 album, and the 1939 movie The Wizard of Oz. The idea is that if you start the album exactly when the MGM lion roars for the third time, it’ll sync up with the film in bizarrely perfect ways. Fans noticed certain musical moments seemed to line up with events in the movie, like Dorothy’s house landing in Oz right as the song “Money” begins. This quirky theory, now famous as “The Dark Side of the Rainbow,” has captivated fans for years.
Just Strange Coincidences
However, members of Pink Floyd have always dismissed it as a coincidence. David Gilmour recently joked about it on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. He admitted he hadn’t heard about the theory until years after the album’s release. “Someone said you put the needle on… and on the third roar of the MGM lion, you put the needle on for the beginning of Dark Side and there’s these strange synchronicities that happen,” Gilmour explained. Intrigued, he decided to try it himself. He admitted:
“There are these strange coincidences.
“I’ll call them coincidences.”
Roger Waters on ‘The Dark Side of the Rainbow’
Roger Waters, however, has a much stronger opinion about it. During a 2022 appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience, Waters was asked about the famous theory. He gave a straightforward response: “Bullshit.” Waters acknowledged that the scenes might sync up if fans follow the instructions but insisted that none of it was intentional. He said:
“It has nothing to do with us—any of us.
“Nothing to do with anyone in Pink Floyd or anyone who wrote or recorded any of the music. It’s a coincidence… Maybe it’s cosmic coincidence!”
Even though Pink Floyd members have debunked it, “The Dark Side of the Rainbow” remains a fun myth for fans to play with. Coincidence or cosmic accident, it’s a lasting piece of rock history that adds a little extra magic to both the album and the movie.
