For the first time in 30 years, Billy Joel teased a new single “Turn the Lights Back On” to be released on Feb. 1.
The “Piano Man” singer already gave a hint to fans present on his last Dec. 19 during his Madison Square Garden residency. He told the crowd as Billboard reports:
“I have good news. I have bad news. Iโll give you the bad news first. We donโt have anything new to play for you. The good news is you donโt have to sit through something you have no idea what it is.
“Although weโve got a little something weโve been working on you might hear sometime.”
Just recently, the 74-year-old singer and songwriter released a teaser for the new single on his YouTube channel. The song is written by Joel, Freddy Wexler, Arthur Bacon and Wayne Hector, and includes the lyrics: โDid I wait too long โฆ to turn the lights back on.โ
The last pop album Joel released was the 1993 River of Dreams and the last song he released was 2007โs “All My Life,” which he dedicated to his then-wife, Katie Lee, that reached No. 1 on Billboardโs Hot Singles Sales chart.
Joelโs longtime label home, Columbia Records will also release the song on Feb. 1 to all digital service providers and on limited edition 7โ vinyl. It will also be accompanied by a lyric video on Joelโs YouTube channel.
In a previous interview with the New Yorker, he shared his thoughts about the decision to stop recording. He said at that time:
โSome people think itโs because Iโm lazy or Iโm just being contrary โฆ But, no, I think itโs just โ Iโve had my say โฆ Iโm not crazy about going into a recording studio and doing that kind of life again, or taking on another project where thereโs other people involved, arrangers and orchestrators and conductors and producers. I donโt want to deal with it.โ
Joel will wrap up his 150th show in July and continue to tour outside of the residency which includes a sold-out stadium show in Tokyo on Jan. 25. Check out the song’s teaser below.
