Good Old Gritty Rock N’ Roll
One thing’s for sure, ZZ Top has always been a gritty band that plays true rock n’ roll. The bearded wonders have also always had a little bit of a twang to their music, and are pioneers on bridging the gap between country and rock. Recently, ZZ Top teamed up with fellow legendary musician and guitarist Jeff Beck to pay tribute to one of their heroes: Tennessee Ernie Ford. Ford is a legendary singer/song writer for country and rock n’ roll. Beck and ZZ Top teamed up for an incredible duet of Ford’s classic hit “Sixteen Tons.”
Fun Fact:This was written in 1947 by the Country & Western guitarist and songwriter Merle Travis. It is based on his coal miner father, whose favorite saying, “Another day older and deeper in debt,” became part of the chorus.
The song is gritty and perfectly adapts to ZZ Top’s style! In addition, Jeff Beck pulls off a great guitar solo in this! It’s awesome to hear country and rock n’ roll come together so seamlessly!
