With These Vocals, Stevie Nicks Steals Tom Petty Fans’ Attention | Society Of Rock Videos

Such A Great Team

The queen of Rock that we all know and love, Ms. Stevie Nicks, subtly appears during this Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers live show with stunning background vocals to “Learning To Fly.”

“I’m learning to fly, but I ain’t got wings. Coming down is the hardest thing.”

Not that we ever thought she was, but this video proves that our goddess Stevie is everything but a diva. Supporting her good friend Tom, Stevie respectfully stays to the very side of the stage simply offering soft, sweet background vocals as he serenades the crowd with his moving ballad.

Fun Fact: Many fans assume that this song is about drugs, but it is not. Tom got the idea for this when he saw a pilot being interviewed on TV. The pilot said how it wasn’t hard learning to fly… the hardest part was coming down.

Starting out with the camera completely focused on Tom and all of his glory, toward a minute in Stevie is revealed as she delicately sways from side to side listening to her friend do what he does best. Tom and Stevie have been known to sing with each other quite often, but it is definitely different to see her to the side performing only background vocals.

+ Learning To Fly Lyrics +

Well I started out down a dirty road
Started out all alone
And the sun went down as I crossed the hill
And the town lit up, the world got still

I’m learning to fly, but I ain’t got wings
Coming down is the hardest thing

Well the good ol’ days may not return
And the rocks might melt and the sea may burn

I’m learning to fly, but I ain’t got wings
Coming down is the hardest thing

Well some say life will beat you down
Break your heart, steal your crown
So I’ve started out for God knows where
I guess I’ll know when I get there

I’m learning to fly, around the clouds,
But what goes up must come down

I’m learning to fly, but I ain’t got wings
Coming down is the hardest thing
