Willie Nelson recently opened up about his memories of Kris Kristofferson, his longtime friend and fellow Highwayman, who passed away at 88. Their connection dates back to 1985 when they joined forces with Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings to form the iconic outlaw country supergroup, the Highwaymen. Together, the four legends recorded three albums, creating a legacy of powerful country music. Even after the Highwaymen disbanded, Nelson and Kristofferson stayed close, sharing stages, including a memorable Grammy performance in 2014.

“He was a great songwriter,” Nelson said in a conversation with the Associated Press. “He left a lot of fantastic songs around for the rest of us to sing.” Nelson recalled their times together:

“Kris was a great friend of mine. We just had a lot of fun and made a lot of music together — videos, movies. I hated to lose him. That was a sad time.”

Reflecting on Outlaw Country Legends

With Kristofferson’s passing, Nelson is now the last surviving member of the Highwaymen. It’s a reality that’s both touching and surreal. “If you just take the music part of it and go back to Waylon and Kris and John and all of us working together, the Highwaymen,” he reflected, “I am the only one left. And that’s just not funny.”

For Nelson, these friendships were more than music; they were bonds forged in years of shared experience and creativity. Their impact as a group was historic, setting a high bar for country music and shaping the genre for generations.

“I Don’t Worry About Dying”

At 91, Nelson is fully aware of his own place in life. “I’m 91 plus, so, you know, I’m not worried about it,” he said. “I don’t feel bad. I don’t hurt anywhere. I don’t have any reason to worry about dying.” He laughed, saying that he’s in good physical shape — though “mentally? That’s another story.”

Legacy doesn’t weigh on his mind. Nelson is content with the journey he’s had. “I had a good time,” he shared. “And I did what I came here to do: make music.” For Willie Nelson, his life’s mission has been fulfilled, leaving a musical legacy that fans and friends like Kristofferson will remember.
