Why Gene Hackman and Wife’s Bodies Still Unclaimed

It’s been more than a month since legendary actor Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy passed away, and yet, their bodies remain unclaimed. TMZ recently confirmed with the Office of the Medical Investigator in New Mexico that both names are still on the list of unclaimed decedents as of this week.
A Sad Delay
Gene and Betsy’s names first appeared on the list on March 24, nearly a month after they were found dead at their Santa Fe home on February 26. Officials say it’s not unusual for bodies to go unclaimed for weeks after someone passes. The delay could be due to the family still working out funeral arrangements or handling estate matters.
Family Matters
Gene Hackman had three children: Christopher, Leslie, and Elizabeth. While his two daughters spoke publicly after his passing, it’s unclear where things stand with the final arrangements. “He wasn’t around much when Chris was growing up,” Hackman once admitted, but added that he reconnected with his kids later in life. Still, Hackman left his entire Hollywood fortune to Betsy, which may have further complicated the family matters.
Tragic Ending
The couple’s deaths were especially heartbreaking. Betsy died on February 12 from hantavirus, a rare illness spread by rodents. Gene passed away several days later, likely around February 17 or 18, due to heart disease and advanced Alzheimer’s. One of their dogs was also found dead nearby, adding another layer of sadness to the discovery.
Investigation Still Open
Although the causes of death have been identified, the investigation remains ongoing. There’s still no word on when Gene and Betsy’s remains will be claimed or what funeral plans might be in place.
Their names remain on the state’s unclaimed list — a quiet, unsettling end for one of Hollywood’s most celebrated actors and his longtime partner.
