Why Dolly Parton Thought Bob Dylan Was Weird

via Country At Its Finest / Youtube

Bob Dylan and Dolly Parton might both be music legends, but their personalities couldn’t be more different. Dolly is warm, approachable, and full of Southern charm, while Dylan is enigmatic and famously reserved. These stark contrasts seem to extend beyond their public personas, as Dolly has admitted they’ve never really clicked on a personal level.

Dolly’s Take on Dylan

In an interview with the Daily Mail, Dolly opened up about her lack of connection with Dylan, saying, “I’ve met him a few times, but I never felt any warmth from him to me.” She added, “I think I have offended him somehow by the way I looked or the way I was. I love his music, but he’s a weird buckaroo.”

This wasn’t the only time Dolly addressed the topic. Speaking with the Telegraph, she elaborated:

“I don’t feel like we ever connected. Maybe he just thought I was too phony or he didn’t get to know me too well.”

Despite this disconnect, Dolly holds a deep admiration for Dylan’s artistry. “I always loved his music,” she told the Telegraph. “His mind is so deep, but his melodies are so good. They lend themselves so well to harmonies.”

A Missed Collaboration

Dolly has even covered several of Dylan’s songs, including “Blowin’ In The Wind” for her 2005 album Those Were the Days. Before recording the track, she invited Dylan to collaborate with her, but he declined. Interestingly, his son, Jakob Dylan, also passed on the invitation.

Why Dylan has kept his distance from Dolly remains a mystery, and perhaps it’s better left that way. Dolly’s openness and Dylan’s guarded nature are simply part of who they are, adding another layer of intrigue to their legacies.

In the end, the lack of a relationship between these two music giants serves as a reminder that even legends don’t always hit the same note offstage. It’s just another quirky chapter in the rich history of music.
