At the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl on December 27, Krystal Keith, the daughter of the late country music icon Toby Keith, gave a heartfelt performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner.” She opened the game between the Oklahoma Sooners and the Navy Midshipmen by singing in front of a huge American flag while standing proudly in the middle of Amon G. Carter Stadium in Fort Worth, Texas.
Krystal truly gave an amazing performance with her strong, clear voice, effortlessly hitting the high notes. She maintained an air of elegance and emotion. Her father would have been proud of the performance’s artistry and location, among other things. This is a very significant occasion since Toby Keith was a devoted University of Oklahoma Sooners fan and a lifelong patriot.
Growing Up Keith: A Superstar’s Secret
For Krystal Keith, growing up as the daughter of a country superstar didn’t mean basking in the spotlight. She went out of her way to keep her father’s fame a secret. In an interview last year, Krystal revealed, “I think I thought everybody’s dad had a job like my dad. He might as well have been a plumber. In fact, that’s what I told people he did.”
She added that when people started to figure out her dad’s true identity, they’d ask probing questions. “They’d be like, ‘What does your dad do for a living?’ I’d be like, ‘He’s a plumber.’” She even refused to share his real name. “I’d say his name was Mark,” she recalled with a laugh.
Why the Secret?
Krystal wasn’t hiding her dad’s identity out of shame. Instead, it was part of an effort to live a normal childhood. Her father worked hard to provide that for her and her siblings, and she carried that mindset. Sometimes, she even had fun with it. “My second favorite thing to say was Garth Brooks,” she joked. “They were expecting Toby Keith, and I’d be like, ‘My dad’s Garth Brooks!’”
By keeping her dad’s fame under wraps, Krystal honored the values he instilled in her—a down-to-earth attitude and a commitment to family above all else.
