Watch The Making Of Jimmy Page & The Black Crowes’ Live at the Greek

Twenty-five years ago, rock history was made when Jimmy Page, the legendary guitarist of Led Zeppelin, joined forces with The Black Crowes for a series of unforgettable concerts at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. The result was Live at the Greek, a powerhouse blend of blues, Zeppelin classics, and Crowes originals that captured the raw energy and spirit of rock ‘n’ roll. It was a once-in-a-lifetime collaboration that felt both electric and effortless.
Now, a quarter of a century later, Jimmy Page, Rich Robinson, and Chris Robinson are looking back at those iconic nights in a new YouTube video that celebrates the 25th anniversary of the concert. With a mix of nostalgia, admiration, and a few laughs, the trio delves into how it all began, what made the shows so special, and why the music still sounds as fresh today. As Rich puts it, “We’re opening the vault,” and what they find inside is pure magic.
A Chance Meeting That Sparked Rock History
It all started backstage in London. The Black Crowes were playing at the Royal Albert Hall when Robert Plant asked if he could bring someone along. That someone was Jimmy Page. “Can I bring Jimmy down?” Plant asked. Chris Robinson recalled their reaction: “We’d love to meet Jimmy, of course.” From the first meeting, the vibe was right. Page said, “I really admired them… They’re definitely from the same school I come from.” A few days later in Paris, Page joined them on stage for the first time, and as Rich Robinson remembered, “The place just like goes absolutely mental.” That one encore jam kicked off what would become an unforgettable collaboration.
The Start of a Musical Bond
What started as a fun idea quickly evolved. Rich shared:
“It was good coz you know the encore comes up. And I’ve got too say, ‘We’re going to play some blues for you. Oh, by the way, I know he doesn’t need an introduction but it sounds good saying that ‘Mr. Jimmy P.’ And the place just like, goes absolutely mental. We like, we were having a pretty good gig like just on our own, you know what I mean. But then to like have him come out.”
Jimmy explained. “I’m really looking forward to playing on their stuff.” The chemistry between Page and the Robinson brothers made it more than a tribute or side gig. “There’s a band that clearly understood its roots,” Page said. “There was already a bond as far as I was concerned.” Chris added that when they performed at the Roseland Ballroom in New York, the energy was unreal:
“It was electric… people lost their minds.”
Reinventing Classics, Feeling the Emotion
When they played “10 Years Gone,” it hit differently. “It was like I died and gone to heaven,” Jimmy said. “It was a really emotional moment.” He’d never heard it live the way they did it together—with harmonies, orchestration, and raw emotion. Chris’s vocals moved him: “He’s singing it beautifully with so much emotion.” The band also brought new life to “In the Light,” and Jimmy said every track was “a different reflection to what it was originally.”
“She Talks to Angels” on Next Level
One of the biggest surprises was what Page did with The Black Crowes’ own classic, She Talks to Angels. Rich said, “It was never the same after that.” Page added a unique country flavor with a B-bender guitar. Chris recalled, “The B bender part he played on Angels, I was like, ‘Fuck.’” Producer Kevin Shirley chimed in: “He [Jimmy] introduces this country twang into this gorgeous Crow song… He’s the guy that introduced the B bender to rock and roll.” Rich added that Jimmy’s touch “changed that song for us subsequently, for the next 25 years.”
Back at the Greek – Still Soaring After 25 Years
By the time they hit the Greek Theatre in L.A., the band was locked in. “We were just ripping it up,” Rich said. “The rafters are still ringing 25 years later.” Listening back now, Page said, “Wow, we were that good. In fact, we were better than I could think that it possibly was.” With new mixes and fresh ears, the music still stuns. Page noted:
“Everybody… was just bringing that extra element. It’s all there to be heard and experienced. You’re going to feel like you’re there, but you’ve been there.”
