His Final Song

John Prine’s family released a video of the last song he recorded prior to his death on April 7, 2020 from COVID-19-related complications. Written by Prine and his longtime collaborator Pat McLaughlin, it’s a beautiful and heartwarming ballad from one of the most influential songwriters of all time.

Dubbed as “the Mark Twain of American Songwriting,” Prine said in a 2017 interview with Rolling Stone: “By the time Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash hooked up [for Nashville Skyline], that’s when I thought, ‘Man, there’s something there where their two paths crossed. My stuff belongs right in the middle.'”

He had his own idols, songwriters he looked up to. But he also managed to influence several rock acts who would go on to make names for themselves and leave their mark in music.

He revealed to Mojo magazine in his last in-depth interview, “Robert’s [Plant] a fan of mine. So is Roger Waters. A lot of the big English rocker guys from the ‘70s like me. I don’t know why they weren’t fans in the ‘70s. But I’m glad everyone’s come around.”

The final song is titled “I Remember Everything” and here, Prine looked back on his life. And with all that happened, the simple arrangement and recording only made you appreciate the beauty of the song more.
