Frontman Steven Tyler’s classic power ballad “Dream On” from Aerosmith’s 1973 self-titled album made its debut. Their first major hit, the song has since become a mainstay on classic rock radio. The band received $175 and a bottle of gin for their performance of “Dream On” at the Shaboo Inn in Willimantic, Connecticut, in November 1971.

The song was a huge hit in the band’s hometown of Boston, even though it only reached No. 59 on the Billboard Hot 100 when it was released in June 1973. It gained a lot of airplay and soon won over local fans, rising to No. 1 on WBZ-FM, No. 5 on WRKO, and No. 16 on WMEX-AM.

High Notes and High Hopes

“Dream On” is known not just for its powerful lyrics and melody but for Steven Tyler’s incredible vocal range. Hitting the high G#5 note is no easy feat, and only a few performers can replicate Tyler’s iconic delivery. The song has challenged many talented singers over the years, with some coming close but few truly matching the original’s power and emotion.
