Journey guitarist Neal Schon performed the U.S. national anthem during the pregame festivities ahead of Game 1 of the NBA Finals at the Chase Center in San Francisco, CA on June 2. The performance came minutes before the Boston Celtics defeat the Golden State Warriors scoring 120-108 and take a 1-0 lead in the series.

Schon was among the founding members of Journey that was formed in San Francisco in 1973. He has been the only consistent member, having participated in every album and tour to date. He contributed to Journey’s classics and chart-topping hits, such as “Don’t Stop Believin'”, “Open Arms”, “Lights”, “Faithfully” and “When You Love A Woman.”

Journey will release their new studio album, Freedom, on July 8. They will launch the new record with a four-date Las Vegas Residency at the Resorts World Theatre in Las Vegas next month, where they will be joined by a symphony orchestra.

The upcoming 15-track collection came together while the band was off the road due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Schon shared:

“During the pandemic, there wasn’t much to do.

“I spent a lot of time in my little studio at home, learning how to play keyboards and looping. Some of those ideas ended up being songs. So it kind of came out of nowhere.”
