Joni Mitchell took part in a surprise 13-track tribute show at the Newport Folk Festival, which was held in Rhod Island. It was the singer’s first public performance since 2013.
Mitchell retired when she suffered from a brain aneurysm in 2015. Although she briefly appeared at the Grammy Awards. News of the “Joni Jam” spread quickly, with her friend David Crosby tweeting:
“Well I was wrong … she’s singing … she can sing … thank you, god … our world is little better tonight.”
He previously reported that her health issues had left her unable to sing. On the festival, the singer was seen seated on the chair when she’s not performing. Last year, Mitchell recalled contracting polio at the age of 9, calling it “a rehearsal for the rest of my life.”
At the event songs like “Help Me,” “A Case of You,” and “Just Like This Train” and ten other songs were performed. The 60-year strong folk festival is being held annually, which usually features a lineup of diverse musicians.
