Glen Campbell was a legendary figure in country music born on April 22, 1936, in Billstown, Arkansas. After a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease, the music artist passed away on August 8, 2017, in Nashville, Tennessee. He shared a final performance despite the onset of his illness during the Ghost on the Canvas tour last November 30, 2012, held in Napa, California.
Campbell’s passing was confirmed by his publicist, Timp Plumley, who shared that he died peacefully in a Nashville healthcare facility where he had been living since 2014. Born into a humble farming family, Campbell’s musical talent became evident early in his life. At the age of 25, he made his first hit single, “Turn Around, Look at Me”. Over the decades he became one of country music’s well-loved vocalists and guitarists.
He rose to fame with his exceptional guitar playing and smooth, heartfelt vocals, maintaining a wholesome image throughout his career, despite personal struggles. Even after revealing his Alzheimer’s diagnosis in 2011, he continued to connect and interact with his fans through his Farewell Tour. His contributions to music were celebrated with numerous awards, including his final Grammy Award in 2015 for Best Country Song with “I’m Not Gonna Miss You,” a powerful track co-written for a documentary about his life and struggle with the disease.
The country icon’s impact on the music world was truly profound, with a career spanning over six decades with countless record albums, and more than 40 million records sold. Campbell was also honored with induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame. His final album, Adiós, released on June 9, 2017, featured twelve tracks from his last recording sessions.
Even in the later stages of his illness, Campbell’s passion for music remained unshaken. He continued to play the guitar at the Alzheimer’s facility where he spent his final years.
