An Unexpected Meeting

Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason talked about the first time he met Roger Waters and Rick Wright onĀ  a recent episode of Brian Johnson’s A Life on the Road TV series. It was in 1964 at a college in London. From the get-go, the meeting wasn’t something you’d expect to turn into a musical collaboration.

Mason said, “Regent Street Polytechnic ā€“ thatā€™s where I met Roger Waters and Rick Wright. We were all training to be architects. It was architectureā€™s loss when the music took off ā€“ or not!”

He continued, “We sort of met because Roger knew that I had a car ā€“ Iā€™m not sure he knew what the car was because actually it was an Austin 7 Chummy with a top speed of 20mph and had no brakes!

“But when he asked if I might lend it to him, I said, ā€˜No,ā€™ but he also tried to get a cigarette off Rick and famously Rick went, ā€˜No,ā€™ which sort of set the pattern really for the next 50 years.”

He further added, “It was an important moment because if it hadnā€™t been for that, we might not be sitting here now.”

A Life on the Road‘s second season will end on December 1. Guests on the upcoming episodes include Joe Walsh, Dolly Parton, Mark Knopfler, Paul Rodgers, and Mick Fleetwood. You can watch it on Sundays at 9/8c on AXS TV.
