The Story Behind Meat Loaf Trying to Push Prince Andrew Into a Moat

Meat Loaf, the legendary rock singer and actor known for hits like “I’d Do Anything for Love,” passed away on January 20, 2022, at the age of 74. The news of his death was shared in a heartfelt post on his official Facebook page that evening, leaving fans around the world to reminisce about his remarkable career and larger-than-life personality. Beyond his music, Meat Loaf’s appearances in films like Fight Club and unique moments in pop culture continued to surface as fans celebrated his life.

The Royal Knockout Event

One such story takes us back to an unexpected chapter in British history. This charity event, created by Prince Edward, aired on BBC One on June 15, 1987, and featured four teams of celebrities, each captained by a member of the British royal family. The captains included Prince Edward, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew, and Sarah Ferguson. While the Queen was reportedly not pleased with the show, it still brought together stars like John Cleese, Christopher Reeve, Cliff Richard, Sheena Easton, Gary Lineker, and John Travolta. Meat Loaf joined Team Ferguson for the event.

The Rock Legend’s Royal Encounter

Reflecting on his experience in a 2003 interview with The Guardian, Meat Loaf described the show as “so much fun,” but humorously added, “the Queen hates me.” He also shared an amusing anecdote about his interactions with the royal family. “Fergie wasn’t exactly flirting with me, but she was paying attention to me,” he said. He speculated that Prince Andrew became a bit jealous:

“He tried to push me in the moat. So I turned around and grabbed him, and he goes, ‘You can’t touch me. I’m royal.’ I said, ‘Well, you try to push me in the moat, Jack, I don’t give a s*** who you are, you’re goin’ in the moat.’”
