The guitarist Bob “Slim” Dunlap, who was most famous for his tenure with the iconic Replacements, died at the age of 73.
The tragic news was confirmed by a message made by his wife on his Facebook fan page. The post said:
“Our beloved Slimbob passed away today surrounded by his family. Loved by everyone. He will live on in all our memories. There will be more words, but I don’t have them now, more than thank you, Bob! Love you, always.”
Early Life and Musical Journey
Dunlap, who was born in Plainview, Minnesota, developed an early passion for music. He began playing the guitar as a youngster and went on to play in several bands in the 1970s. He worked with musician and graphic artist Curtiss Almsted during his musical career, especially with the band Spooks. Paul Westerberg, the frontman of the Replacements, noticed Dunlap during this period and asked him to join the group in 1987. Dunlap first declined the invitation, but he later joined the band as their replacement guitarist.
Joining the Replacements and Legacy
The Replacements had a strong discography and were well-established by the time Dunlap joined. In 1985, they had transitioned from underground icons to big labels, such as Sire Records. Dunlap contributed to the band’s biggest success, “I’ll Be You,” which peaked at No. 51 on the Billboard Hot 100, and played on their final two albums, Don’t Tell a Soul (1989) and All Shook Down (1990). Even though the Replacements disbanded in 1991, Dunlap’s contributions to the band’s music will never be forgotten.
Life After the Replacements
Even after the band broke up, Dunlap continued to perform. He released his own solo music and went on tour with Georgia Satellites member Dan Baird. He continued to be active in the Minneapolis music scene as well. He suffered a terrible stroke in 2012 that left him seriously disabled. In response, the other members of the Replacements put together an EP called Songs for Slim to collect money for Dunlap’s medical bills.
The Replacements’ impact on alternative music is indisputable, even though they may not have had enormous mainstream success. Their enduring influence has been shown by their 2014 candidacy to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The memories of everyone who loved Bob “Slim” Dunlap and his music will carry on his legacy.
