The Real Reason Why Frank Zappa Hated Jethro Tull

Jethro Tull was among the progressive rock bands that became famous in the late ’60s and early ’70s. They were known for pushing musical boundaries, blending hard rock, folk, and classical influences. Yet, while fans of prog-rock admired Frank Zappa’s complex, experimental style, Zappa himself wasn’t as enthused about British prog-rock. Known for his sharp wit and strong opinions, Zappa reportedly took issue with the melodic similarities and commercial success of bands like Jethro Tull, Led Zeppelin, and Deep Purple, who were taking the U.S. by storm.

Ian Anderson’s Admiration vs. Zappa’s Disdain

Jethro Tull’s Ian Anderson was a big fan of Zappa, but the feeling wasn’t in any way mutual. In an interview with BBC Radio, Anderson recalled, “Sadly, I never got to meet Frank Zappa; we nearly did…I actually read that he didn’t like Jethro Tull at all back then in the ’70s.” Anderson noted that Zappa seemed resentful of the British bands’ success in America, explaining:

“We were going over there [United States] and making tons of money, seemingly while he was struggling to run his band.”

A Missed Connection

Later, while Zappa was fighting illness, he sent word that he wanted to speak with Anderson, but Anderson hesitated. “I was in fear of taking up the invitation to call him shortly before he died,” Anderson said. “I thought, ‘How do you speak to a dying man?’” The two musicians, who never met in person, ultimately missed the chance to connect, a regret Anderson holds to this day.

A Lasting Legacy

Though Zappa and Anderson had their differences, both artists left a lasting mark on rock music. Zappa passed away from his illness in 1993, but his music continues to inspire, with songs like “Cosmik Debris” which showed his originality, and made him a legend.
