The Hidden Story Of The Singer That Taught George Harrison How To Write Songs

When we think of The Beatles’ songwriters, we usually think of the famous pair of John Lennon and Paul McCartney. George Harrison also had his own voice, but it needed some time and help to bring it out. That’s where Donovan, a folk singer from the 1960s, comes in.
Donovan wasn’t as famous around the world as The Beatles, but he was well-known and respected in the British folk scene. He made his mark on music history with tunes including “Season of the Witch,” “Catch the Wind,” and “Hurdy Gurdy Man.” But perhaps one of his most lasting contributions was the inspiration he gave to George Harrison as the quiet Beatle found his songwriting confidence.
George’s Songwriting Mentor Behind the Scenes
According to Donovan himself, he played a key role in helping George Harrison find his songwriting voice during The Beatles’ years.
“I became George’s mentor for songwriting,” Donovan revealed. “He was in the shadow of John and Paul for so many years and I said, ‘Look, I’ll show you a few tricks, how to encourage the songs,’” he shared in an interview with Gold Radio.
Donovan wasn’t talking about music theory or formulas. He meant tuning into the subtle, creative flow that great songwriters learn to follow. “There’s a way to encourage the song to come. You can tease it, like fishing,” he said. “I told him how to play a chord, then put your ear on the guitar, listen to the open chord, and try a tempo. You can hear melodies, believe it or not. Melodies appear, but you’ve got to be quick to catch them.”
A Little Help for a Legendary Track?
While Donovan didn’t confirm specific songs he helped with, it’s been rumored that he guided Harrison during the creation of “Something,” one of George’s most beloved Beatles tracks. Whether or not that’s true, his role in supporting Harrison’s creativity shows how even musical legends benefit from encouragement and fresh perspective.
Because as Donovan and George proved, asking for help isn’t a weakness — it’s part of the magic.
