Epic Tracks

The Dave Clark Five had more hits in the ’60s than The Yardbirds, The Kinks, and The Animals. They were almost as big as The Beatles with so many write-ups comparing the two back in the day. They sold millions of records. Unfortunately, not everyone remembers them now and even more heartbreaking, they’re largely forgotten. So, what happened?

It was a miscalculation on the part of Dave Clark – the band’s leader, manager, and producer. Between 1978 and 1993, Clark declined to license their recordings and so for over a decade, none of their music became available for purchase in ANY format.

“I always said we’d stop when the fun went out of it, that was the agreement from the start. I had other things I wanted to do.” – Dave Clark

And so we compiled five of their greatest hits to remind us why they deserve more appreciation.

5. Catch Us If You Can

It charted in the US and UK. It was so popular worldwide that in Australia, a TV show was named after the song.

4. Because

One of the most easily recognizable songs of the ’60s, this romantic ballad peaked at #3 on the US Billboard Hot 100. John Lennon’s son Julian recorded a cover back in 1985.

3. Over & Over

There were several covers of this Robert James Byrd original but DC5’s version became the most popular and successful. They changed it a bit by adding their signature sound to it and omitted the last verse. The song topped the charts in the US.

2. Bits & Pieces

Some theater owners at the time prohibited DC5 from playing this raucous and rousing number during their concerts because they were afraid that the audience would jump and get wild to the beat which could potentially damage the venue.

1. Glad All Over

Takes you back to the ’60s, it became their first big hit. According to Dave Clark, “I knew that we needed a song with the thumps in. we had been playing dance halls and we were getting a great audience response to the stomping things we were doing.”
