Great news for fans of the Goonies! Warner Bros. is reportedly developing a sequel to the beloved adventure classic from 1985. This move is consistent with the studio’s strategy to revive popular franchises, which it is achieving by bringing back specific well-known characters.
Chris Columbus, who co-wrote the first Goonies with Steven Spielberg, will write the sequel’s script. A former contributor to the Gremlins franchise, Columbus is juggling two projects that strongly rely on nostalgia while writing the screenplay for a new Gremlins movie.
Although there is presently no information on a release date or cast confirmation, the sequel may bring back original stars Josh Brolin, Ke Huy Quan, Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Jeff Cohen, Martha Plimpton, and Kerri Green as the now-adult group of adventurous kids.
Revisiting a Treasure-Hunting Classic
In the original Goonies, a group of children discover a pirate’s treasure map and set off on an exciting adventure to locate the treasures while avoiding a dangerous criminal family. It was a timeless hit because of its unique blend of adventure, humor, and heart.
Fans have been waiting impatiently for a sequel for years, but difficulties in writing a compelling plot have delayed development. In 2020, Steven Spielberg himself admitted during a livestream for the film’s 35th anniversary that finding a worthy follow-up has been a struggle. “Every couple of years we come up with an idea, but then it doesn’t hold water,” Spielberg explained.
He added, “The bar was set so high with the first movie. Until we do, people are just going to have to look at this [livestream] a hundred times!”
The Cast Weighs In
Ke Huy Quan, fresh off his Golden Globe win in 2023, expressed interest in reprising his role as Data, though he acknowledged the challenges of moving forward without the late director Richard Donner. “Sadly, we lost the captain of our ship, who I love dearly,” Quan said.
Corey Feldman, who played Mouth in the original, shared similar sentiments before Donner’s passing in 2021. “Every time I thought, ‘OK, it’s really gonna happen,’ I’ve been let down and had my heart broken,” he admitted.
Is the Adventure Back On?
Even though nothing is finalized, fans are optimistic about the rumors of a Goonies sequel. The Goonies’ legacy will motivate future generations to embrace their inner explorers, whether it becomes a reality or stays a dream.
