A New Discovery for Fans
Decades after Marc Bolan’s untimely death, his music continues to resonate across generations. As the frontman of T. Rex, Bolan helped shape the glam rock sound of the 1970s and left a mark on punk, new wave, indie, and Britpop. To honor what would have been his 78th birthday, his estate has released “I’m Daze,” a previously unheard track that had been hidden away for nearly half a century.
What makes this release remarkable is that Bolan’s estate has often revisited his catalog through reissues, compilations, and box sets. Yet “I’m Daze” had never surfaced until recently. The track was uncovered while reviewing old tapes from T. Rex recording sessions in the mid-1970s.
Unearthing “I’m Daze”
“While cataloguing some old T. Rex tapes, I spotted tracks I’d never heard before,” said Martin Barden, consultant to Demon Music, per Uncut. “When we played the reel and Marc’s voice came through, it was magical. To unearth this completely unheard track, ‘I’m Dazed’, after 50 years, feels like finding hidden treasure and is a true gift for fans.”
The song was first recorded at Château d’Hérouville studios near Paris in March 1975. A second version followed a month later at Musicland Studios in Munich, Germany. Both recordings featured the mid-‘70s lineup: Bolan, Steve Currie, Gloria Jones, Davey Lutton, and Dino Dines.
The Era of Recording
At the time, Bolan was living a restless lifestyle, moving frequently across countries and studios. “This song was recorded when Marc was living an itinerant life, hopping across borders and continents – and producing some of the most innovative music of his life,” Barden added. “It is such a pleasure to be sharing new music after all these years.”
Though many of T. Rex’s best-known songs included backing vocals from Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman of the Turtles, their names do not appear on “I’m Daze.” Still, the track captures the raw energy of Bolan’s work in this period.
Honoring Bolan’s Legacy
The release of “I’m Daze” also coincides with English Heritage unveiling a blue plaque at Bolan’s former home at 31 Clarendon Gardens in Maida Vale, London. The plaque serves as a permanent tribute to his lasting influence.
On Sept. 16, 1977, Bolan died in a car accident at age 29. His girlfriend and musical partner, Gloria Jones, had been driving when their Mini 1275 GT veered off the road at Queens Ride, Barnes Common. A 2012 biography clarified that the fatal impact came when the car struck a steel-enforced fence before hitting a sycamore tree. The tree stopped the vehicle from sliding further, likely saving Jones’ life.
Today, the crash site has become a shrine. The T. Rex Action Group purchased the land to preserve the sycamore tree, ensuring it remains a place where fans can continue to honor Bolan’s memory.
