Authorities have released new surveillance footage showing the suspect in the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk fleeing from the scene at Utah Valley University (UVU). The video captures the suspect sprinting across the roof of a one-story building before leaping down to the ground. He is then seen walking calmly across the street and into a wooded area.
Investigators later recovered a high-powered rifle from that wooded location. Utah Governor Spencer Cox condemned the shooter as an โevil human beingโ during a press conference announcing the new evidence.
Key Details About the Suspect Revealed
Utah Department of Public Safety Commissioner Beau Mason presented an enhanced image of the suspect during the briefing. The individual was dressed entirely in black, wearing a shirt that featured an American flag and an eagle, along with a hat marked by a triangular symbol.
Governor Cox confirmed that the state intends to pursue the death penalty if the suspect is apprehended. He also revealed that law enforcement agencies have received more than 7,000 tips and conducted approximately 200 interviews since the shooting occurred.
Authorities are urging the public to continue submitting digital evidence, noting that the volume of incoming media files is comparable to that seen during the investigation of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing.
Governor Warns of Misinformation and Foreign Influence
In addition to updating the public on the investigation, Cox warned about the spread of disinformation related to the case. He stated that bots originating from Russia and China are actively working to distort facts and incite violence online.
Cox concluded the briefing by encouraging the public to heed Charlie Kirkโs message of valuing family, especially during times of hardship.
Tragic Loss During National Tour
Charlie Kirk, a prominent conservative commentator and founder of Turning Point USA, was shot and killed on Wednesday while speaking at a stop on his “American Comeback Tour” at UVU. He leaves behind his wife, Erika, and their two young children.
