Dave Cousins, the founding force behind the Strawbs and their longtime frontman, has died at 85. The news was shared on his official Facebook page earlier today, marking the end of an era. The announcement reads:
“David Joseph Cousins 1940-2025. It is with profound sadness that we have to announce the passing of David Joseph Cousins at the Pilgrims Hospice in Canterbury, peacefully following a long illness, today, Sunday 13 July 2025.”
Fans and loved ones are invited to celebrate his life in their own way. The statement encourages:
“We, therefore, ask you to enjoy listening to your favourite Cousins song as the sun goes down, in whatever part of the world you are, enjoying what he would refer to as a glass of vino collapse (wine)…”
From Bluegrass Beginnings to Progressive Rock Legacy
Born David Joseph Hindson in 1940, Cousins formed the Strawbs from the earlier bluegrass band Strawberry Hill Boys. The band evolved over the years, moving from folk into the progressive rock realm, with early contributions from Sandy Denny, who later joined Fairport Convention. The Strawbs were the first UK group signed to A&M Records, and their 1969 self-titled album was produced by Gus Dudgeon with Tony Visconti’s help.
Rick Wakeman, who later became a star with Yes, was a key member during the early ’70s, contributing to albums like Just A Collection Of Antiques And Curios and From The Witchwood. Although best known for their 1973 hit Part Of The Union, albums such as Grave New World (1972) and Hero And Heroine (1974) remain defining works in the band’s catalog.
Final Years and Lasting Impact
Despite significant health challenges including cancer surgery and joint replacements, Cousins continued to make music until retiring from touring in 2021. The Strawbs’ final performance was at the Cropredy Festival in 2023. Over the years, the band worked with many talented musicians, including the Wakeman brothers and others, releasing recent albums like The Ferryman’s Curse (2017), Settlement (2021), and The Magic Of It All (2023).
The tribute closes with a heartfelt request:
“Meanwhile, we ask you to join in remembering a wonderful, talented man, whose life has touched us all.”
