Stranger Things’ Star Teases Upcoming Movie About The Replacements

From Netflix fame to indie music stages, Finn Wolfhard is now taking on a new creative venture: co-writing a film about alt-rock trailblazers The Replacements. Best known for his role as Mike Wheeler on Stranger Things, Wolfhard is collaborating with his father, Eric Wolfhard, and producer Rich Peete to bring the chaotic, compelling story of the cult Minneapolis band to the big screen.

The film will be based on Bob Mehr’s 2016 biography Trouble Boys: The True Story of the Replacements, a critically lauded deep-dive into one of rock’s most self-destructive—and beloved—bands.

“Death, Drugs, Denial and Deceit”

Trouble Boys isn’t your average rock bio. Upon its release, Classic Rock magazine praised the book’s unparalleled access and depth of reporting:

“What puts Mehr’s book far above any other on this prickly subject is the depth of research; all remaining members, the Stinson family, tour managers, label heads all make for a fascinating confluence of voices echoing the same sentiments about a band who got the keys to the family car and then promptly, and deliberately, drove it right off the road.”

The publication added:

“Death, drugs, denial and deceit—this story of a band that Mehr describes memorably as flying high and living low has it all.”

The Replacements, known for their raw energy, anti-establishment ethos, and knack for self-sabotage, are a fitting subject for a generation of artists who continue to be influenced by their music and myth.

Wolfhard: “I Weirdly Have a Lot in Common with Them”

Wolfhard, no stranger to music himself, has been a member of Vancouver-based bands Calpurnia and The Aubreys, and released his debut solo album Happy Birthday earlier this year. Now, he’s blending his passion for music and film in this new project.

Speaking to Variety last month, he shared his connection to the band’s story:

“I’ve been writing a lot of music and writing this movie with my dad, which has been really amazing. It’s about a band that I think, weirdly, I have a lot in common with a lot of the members.”

Wolfhard is currently touring Europe and is scheduled to play four UK shows starting October 12.
