A frightening moment unfolded during a concert when The Christians’ drummer, Lionel Duke, suffered a cardiac arrest while performing as a supporting act for Sting in Liverpool. The incident took place during the song “Greenbank Drive,” just four songs into the band’s set at the On The Waterfront event.
Lead singer Garry Christian immediately stopped the show and called for medical help. Thanks to the quick action of on-site medics, Duke was rushed to the hospital for urgent care. The band later shared the news on Facebook to update concerned fans and thank the medical team.
“Thank you so much to all the many many messages regarding our drummer Lionel Duke who suffered a cardiac arrest while performing at tonight’s amazing concert ahead of Sting,” they wrote.
A Fast Response and Hopeful Update
The statement continued with a message of appreciation for the medical professionals and a hopeful note about Duke’s condition.
“We are awaiting news from the Heart and Chest hospital at Broad Green and thank the phenomenal team of medics present from On The Waterfront Liverpool team who stepped in so swiftly to help our poor Lionel,” the band added. “Please send positive vibes his way.”
The emergency brought a wave of support from fans and fellow musicians, highlighting how crucial it is to have trained medical staff at large-scale events.
Sting Offers Support and a Song
After the incident, Sting was given the green light to proceed with his set. He didn’t shy away from the moment and chose to address the crowd with empathy.
“The drummer in the band before is OK. He’s in hospital. All of us are praying he’s going to be fine. Our thoughts are with him,” he told the audience.
To close the night, Sting dedicated his emotional song “Fragile” to Lionel Duke, adding a touching tribute to a night that had begun on a far different note.
Lionel Duke, a longtime member of The Christians since at least 2009, remains in the hospital as fans continue to hope for his recovery. More updates are expected in the coming days.
