Emergency Surgery in Spain
Steven Van Zandt, longtime guitarist for Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, will miss a few shows after undergoing an emergency medical procedure.
Van Zandt shared on Instagram that he had appendix surgery while in Spain. He was unable to perform with the band at Tuesday night’s Reale Arena concert in San Sebastian but hopes to return soon.
“Got a sharp pain in my stomach… thought it was food poisoning, turned out to be appendicitis,” he wrote. “Got lucky with an exceptional hospital in San Sebastian. Operation was a complete success and I’m hoping to get back on stage for at least one of the shows in Milan. Thank you all for all the good vibes. See you soon.”

Tour Continues Without Him
According to Ultimate Classic Rock, the E Street Band’s European tour continues in Germany on Friday, then heads to Milan for concerts on June 30 and July 3. No further shows are planned for the rest of the year.
Van Zandt, also known as Little Steven, is 74 and one of the most well-known members of the band. Besides his work with Springsteen, he’s also played with Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes and led his own group, Little Steven and the Disciples of Soul.

Famous Roles and Other Health Issues
Outside of music, Van Zandt is known for his acting. He played Silvio Dante on The Sopranos from 1999 to 2007. He’s also hosted radio programs, bringing attention to lesser-known rock artists.
Health challenges have affected others in the band as well. Springsteen postponed tour dates in 2023 due to peptic ulcer disease. His wife and bandmate, Patti Scialfa, also revealed her multiple myeloma diagnosis last year.
Upcoming Film on Springsteen
A new movie titled Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere is in the works. It stars Jeremy Allen White (The Bear) as Bruce Springsteen, Johnny Cannizzaro (Jersey Boys) as Van Zandt, and Jeremy Strong (Succession) as producer Jon Landau.
Their recent tour, including stops in Syracuse and Albany, has also been featured in a new documentary now streaming on Disney+ and Hulu.
