Steve Perry, the legendary former Journey frontman, has brought fans an emotional treasure with the expanded edition of The Season. One of its highlights is a heartwarming duet with his late father, Ray Perry, on the classic song “Call Me Irresponsible.” Accompanied by a creatively animated video, the track holds deep personal meaning for Perry, who unearthed a long-lost family keepsake that made the song possible.
A Song from the Past
In an official statement, Perry shared a touching backstory: “My father, Ray Perry, was a singer, and when I was a child, he would sing to me at bedtime.” In 1993, his dad sent him a karaoke cassette as a Christmas gift.
“The one song that touched me the most was ‘Call Me Irresponsible.’ His voice was lovely.”
Using modern technology, Perry fulfilled a lifelong dream. He explained:
“We pulled his voice off the cassette and recorded beautiful music around him.
“An unfulfilled dream of singing with my father was now possible. At the end of his cassette, dad says, ‘Merry Christmas, God love ya.’ To hear him speak again brought tears to my eyes.”
Rekindling the Holiday Spirit
The expanded album, now called The Season 3, features five newly recorded tracks, including “Jingle Bell Rock” and “Let It Snow.” Produced with Thom Flowers, Perry recorded most of the album in his home studio, with help from drummer Vinnie Colaiuta and multi-instrumentalist Dallas Kruse.
Perry first ventured into holiday music with his 2019 Silver Bells EP, followed by the original version of The Season in 2021. He revisited these classics as a way to reignite the holiday spirit after a challenging pandemic season. “The ones I recorded were the ones that touched me most when I was a child,” Perry explained, “and conjured up the spirit of Christmas.”
The new “Call Me Irresponsible” video, designed and animated by Tolga Tarhan, adds an inventive visual touch to this heartfelt musical reunion. Fans of Perry’s timeless voice will undoubtedly find this duet a beautiful celebration of family, music, and holiday cheer.
