Sex Pistols guitarist Steve Jones recently opened up about the possibility of original frontman John Lydon rejoining the band, while highlighting why their current singer Frank Carter is a better fit moving forward. Speaking to Guitar World, Jones reflected on the band’s evolving dynamic and new direction.
Jones expressed respect for Lydon’s legendary role, saying:
“I’ve got nothing but love for John. He was brilliant back in the day, and I would never take that away from him.”
However, he acknowledged the natural distance that has grown between them over time:
“I think we’ve just grown apart. He’s going somewhere else, and we’re going somewhere else. It’s just the way it is.”
When comparing Lydon to Carter, Jones noted the difference in energy levels:
“I’ll never shut the door, but I don’t think he’d have the energy like Frank does, to be honest.”
A New Energy Injected into Punk’s Pioneers
Critics have widely praised Carter’s influence on the Sex Pistols. Mojo described his presence as bringing a “new burst of energy and charisma,” while The Guardian pointed out his “wide-eyed intensity” as a fresh contrast to Lydon’s iconic sneer. Exit Festival went further, suggesting Carter doesn’t just fill the role but “redefines” the band’s identity.
Born in 1984 in Hemel Hempstead, Carter is no stranger to punk’s hardcore edge, having fronted the band Gallows before joining the Sex Pistols. Outside music, he also channels his creativity as a tattoo artist with his own shop, Rose of Mercy — underscoring his deep roots in punk culture.
A Fresh Chapter for the Sex Pistols
Jones’ remarks underscore the band’s shift toward a revitalized lineup that thrives on renewed authenticity and vigor. With Carter at the helm, the Sex Pistols have found a freedom and dynamism that had eluded them for decades, allowing them to reimagine their legendary sound.
While the door remains open for Lydon’s possible return, the group clearly embraces the energy and direction Carter brings — marking a bold new chapter in the band’s ongoing legacy.
