The Guitar Speaks For Itself

We all know that SRV was the master of the 12 string and a close second to all time greatest guitarist in history, Jimi Hendrix, but one thing is for sure: SRV had soul in fingers and his expressions. Some people even believe he is better and who are we to disagree after viewing this life changing performance of the great SRV annihilating Jimi’s “Voodoo Child (Slight Return)” live in Tokyo ’85 for a good 15 minutes.

“Well, I stand up next to a mountain, chop it down with the edge of my hand.”

As he tributes his ultimate idol in this extremely moving show, we shudder in thought that we lost such a great talent at such a devastatingly young age.

Fun Fact: As well as Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan’s blues playing style was strongly influenced by Albert King who dubbed himself Stevie’s “Godfather.”

Footage from this performance actually came from the album Live In Tokyo released in 2006, just 16 years after Stevie’s unfortunate passing.

Chances are that Tokyo had no idea what they were in the presence of or the volumes these chords spoke, but we recognize true greatness when we see it.

+ Voodoo Child (Slight Return) Lyrics +

Well, I stand up next to a mountain
And I chop it down with the edge of my hand
Well, I stand up next to a mountain
Chop it down with the edge of my hand
Well, I pick up all the pieces and make an island
Might even raise just a little sand
‘Cause I’m a voodoo child
Lord knows I’m a voodoo child

I didn’t mean to take you up all your sweet time
I’ll give it right back to you one of these days
I said, I didn’t mean to take you up all your sweet time
I’ll give it right back to you one of these days
And if I don’t meet you no more in this world
Then I’ll, I’ll meet you in the next one
And don’t be late, don’t be late
‘Cause I’m a voodoo child
Lord knows I’m a voodoo child
I’m a voodoo child
