Stevie Ray Vaughan: At heart, still a boy with a guitar!

Stevie Ray Vaughan was a joy to watch play live because he was living his dream and the pure joy he felt while playing was infectious.

The first thing he does in this video of his performance of ‘The Things (That) I Used To Do’ is bow graciously, and then Stevie smiles like he can’t believe he’s in Germany, performing in front of thousands of people.

That kind of humility is rare, especially in a musician of Stevie’s caliber. But at the end of the day, he was just a boy from Texas who really, really wanted to play his guitar.

‘The Things (That) I Used To Do’ was written by Guitar Slim and produced by the legendary Ray Charles before Stevie got his hands on it. Stevie kept the blues and regretful tone, but added a little bit of attitude to make it interesting.

The fact that Stevie is playing ‘The Things (That) I Used To Do’ in front of a sold out festival crowd tells you his mass appeal – whether you were a kid at a festival or a jaded adult watching him in a smoky club somewhere in Canada, some part of you was shaken to the core by Stevie’s presence and the sheer talent he possessed.

You’ll be blown away by not only his talent, but how at home he looks on stage in a country far away from home!

+ The Things (That) I Used To Do lyrics +

The things that I used to doc
Lord, I won’t do no more
The things that I used to do
Lord, I won’t do no more
I used to sit and hold your hand darlin’
And cry, oh babe do not go

I used to search all night for you darlin’
Lord, and my search would always end in vain
I used to search all night for you darlin’
Lord, and my search would always end in vain
But I knew all the time darlin’
That you was hid out wit’ your other man

I’m goin’ to send you back to your mama darlin’
Lord, and I’m goin’ back to my family too
I’m goin’ to send you back to your mama darlin’
Lord, and I’m goin’ back to my family too
Nothin’ I can do to please ya’ darlin’
I just can’t get along with you
