Sharon Osbourne recently discussed the decision to decline Kanye West’s request to sample an Ozzy Osbourne song for the rapper’s latest album listening event.
West, now known as Ye, alongside Ty Dolla $ign, hosted the event in Chicago, featuring a track that sampled Ozzy’s live performance of “Iron Man” from 1983. Sharon, who manages Ozzy’s career, explained that they receive numerous requests for song samples but refused West’s due to his divisive behavior, stating, “We don’t want to be associated with a hater.” She emphasized that despite any excuses, spreading hate shouldn’t be tolerated.
The decision involved all original members of Black Sabbath, as “Iron Man” is credited to the entire band. Despite initially asking to sample “War Pigs,” West ultimately used “Iron Man” in a track called “Carnival,” which was released without the Sabbath sample after the refusal.
Ozzy himself expressed his disapproval, citing West’s antisemitic remarks and causing “untold heartache.” West’s past controversies include being labeled “antisemite of the year” by a watchdog group in 2022 and facing backlash for his comments on social media. Despite his difficulties in booking venues, including his hometown’s United Center, West’s actions continue to draw criticism.
Sharon Osbourne’s Jewish background adds another layer to the refusal, as she highlighted her family’s observance and comfort with Judaism. This refusal isn’t the first interaction between West and Ozzy’s music; West previously sampled “Iron Man” in his 2010 track “Hell Of A Life.” However, recent events have strained any association between the two artists.
Additionally, West’s affiliation with controversial figures, such as wearing a t-shirt from the band Burzum, led by a convicted murderer and known for extreme views, adds to the scrutiny surrounding his actions. Despite West’s artistic endeavors, his choices and associations continue to generate controversy and criticism.
