Roger Waters Shared Former Pink Floyd Band Members Were ‘Toxic’

The conflicts that ended Roger Waters‘ relationship with David Gilmour, Rick Wright, and Nick Mason were less outrageous than others in rock history, but they were certainly significant. Waters openly criticized his former Pink Floyd bandmates, describing them as “snotty and snippy because they felt very insignificant.”

In a candid interview on the WTF podcast, Waters reflected on his departure from the band in 1985, suggesting it was a crucial step for his solo career. He also mentioned that it was important he got away when he did.

He also recounted how David and Rick accused him of being “tone-deaf” and not understanding music. Waters also added:

“I was in a very toxic environment where David and Rick were always trying to drag me down, always trying to knock me off.”

The possibility of a Pink Floyd reunion seems increasingly unlikely. Gilmour, in an interview with Guitar Player earlier this year, stated:

“It has run its course, we are done. I’m all for Roger doing whatever he wants to do and enjoying himself.”

The two band members have recently clashed over the content for the long-awaited reissue of the 1977 album Animals. Meanwhile, a new remixed version of A Momentary Lapse of Reason, Pink Floyd’s first album recorded without Waters, is set to be released on October 29.

Despite their ongoing disputes, Waters still acknowledges the remarkable music they created together. He said:

“Those years that we were together, whatever it was like socially, there is no question but that we did some really good work together.
“We didn’t share the vision but we shared the work.”

While the interpersonal dynamics within Pink Floyd were fraught with tension, their collaboration for years did make a mark in the music industry.
