A Friendship That Changed Music
Robert Plant has shared a touching message in memory of Terry “Superlungs” Reid, who passed away at the age of 75. Reid was once offered the chance to become the lead singer of Led Zeppelin but turned it down. Instead, he recommended Robert Plant and drummer John Bonham to Jimmy Page, setting the foundation for the bandโs legendary lineup.
Plant, now 76, remembered how Reid helped shape his early music life. โTerry Reidโs enthusiasm and encouragement were incredible back then,โ he wrote. โStill teenagers, we crashed each othersโ gigs and crucified Season Of The Witch time and time again. So much fun. So on it. He was all of everything. Such charisma.โ
Remembering a Voice and a Legacy
Plant continued, praising Reidโs singing and songs: โHis voice, his range. His songs, capturing that carefree era. Superlungs, indeed. He catapulted me into an intense new world he chose to decline. I listen now to his album The River and shed a tear for my brother in arms.โ
The two remained close over the years. In 2004, Plant joined Reid on stage during a show at The Joint in Los Angeles. Reid told the crowd, โThis man should have had my lifeโฆ mind you, Iโm not sure heโd want it!โ He added jokingly, โI wouldnโt mind some of the money!โ

Health Struggles and Final Tour Plans
In July, Reid postponed his fall tour due to cancer treatment. His family shared a statement explaining the delay: โDue to medical issues arising from recent treatment for cancer Terry has had to postpone his autumn 2025 UK, Irish and Norway. Terry is especially upset about this as his 2024 tour was so successful and he had been looking forward to playing some new towns and venues plus old faves, as well as his first ever dates in Norway.โ
A Career of Collaboration and Influence
Reid began his career in the mid-1960s and quickly gained attention for his voice. At just 18, he was touring with The Rolling Stones and Cream. His early albums Bang, Bang You’re Terry Reid and River were praised for blending rock, blues, and soul. He also worked with artists like Graham Nash, Joe Perry, Jackson Browne, and Bonnie Raitt. His music has been covered and sampled by many.
Tributes came in from friends and fans alike. Guitarist Joe Bonamassa shared a photo and wrote, โGoodbye my friend. It was an honour to get to know you as friend and a musical mentor… Rest in peace Terry Reid. My deepest condolences to his family on this terrible day.โ
