Robert Plant has released “Chevrolet,” the third advance single from his upcoming album, Saving Grace, which is set for release on September 26. The track follows recent previews “Everybody’s Song” and “Gospel Plough,” building anticipation for what will be Plant’s twelfth solo studio album. “Chevrolet” is a reinterpretation of Donovan’s 1965 track “Hey Gyp (Dig the Slowness),” which was originally inspired by the 1930 blues tune “Can I Do It for You” by Memphis Minnie and Kansas Joe McCoy. That blues duo also created the first version of “When the Levee Breaks,” which Led Zeppelin famously reimagined for their 1971 album Led Zeppelin IV.
A Band Born from a New Musical Chapter
Saving Grace is Plant’s first album since Raise the Roof, his 2021 collaboration with Alison Krauss, and marks his return to solo work since 2017’s Carry Fire. The album takes its name from the band Plant, formed in 2019, which includes vocalist Suzi Dian, drummer Oli Jefferson, guitarist Tony Kelsey, multi-instrumentalist Matt Worley, and cellist Barney Morse-Brown. Plant has expressed how inspired he feels by this group, describing their music as a fresh and evolving sound that blends voice, song, and style in new and unexpected ways. He called it “a living, new world” of musical exploration.
Rooted in Americana, Headed for North America
Continuing his long-running interest in Americana and roots music, which began with 2007’s Raising Sand, the album includes covers of tracks by artists such as Moby Grape, Blind Willie Johnson, Low, and The Low Anthem. These selections showcase Plant’s deepening connection to folk and blues traditions, as well as his talent for reimagining songs across genres and generations. The band initially began performing in small venues in Plant’s hometown during the pandemic, but has since toured extensively across the U.K. and Europe. Now, Plant and Saving Grace are set to launch their first North American tour, with 15 shows scheduled between October 30 and November 3. The tour will begin in Wheeling, West Virginia, and conclude in Valley Center, California.
