Richie Sambora, former Bon Jovi guitarist, recently underwent emergency surgery after injuring his hand during a casual game of touch football. The accident occurred in April when Sambora caught a ball and was pushed into a curb, resulting in fractures in two places.

“He caught a ball and some guy gave him a touch right into a curb,” a source told People magazine. “He was completely swollen, and fractured his hand in two places.”

Doctors had to re-break and reset the hand to treat the injury properly, and although the recovery has been difficult, Sambora is making impressive progress. “It’s been an arduous, slow and painful process,” the source shared, “but doctors say his healing rate is double what’s typical.”

Rocking Through the Pain

Despite the injury, Sambora didn’t let it stop him from performing. On May 2, just weeks after the incident, he took the stage at the Unbridled Eve Gala during the Kentucky Derby festivities.

“When he told the doctor he was going to the Derby, the doctor said, ‘You’re out of your mind,’” the source recalled. “But [Sambora] said, ‘See ya! I’m going.’ That’s the kind of guy Richie is. He’s a man of his word.”

Back in Action and Born to Rock

On July 11, Sambora celebrated his 66th birthday by releasing a new single titled “Born to Rock.” In a message to fans, he wrote:

“Hey everyone! I’m almost back! Thank you my friends and fans all over the world for the love, support and the faith to listen. Sending love and gratitude backatcha.”
